Pradhan Mantri Suryoday Yojana: Objectives, Features, Eligibility, Application Process

The Pradhan Mantri Suryoday Yojana, also known as the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, is a transformative initiative launched by the Government of India to promote the adoption of solar energy across the nation. Announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 15, 2024, the scheme aims to install rooftop solar panels in one crore (10 million) households by March 2027, thereby providing free electricity to millions and advancing India’s commitment to sustainable energy.

Objectives of the Scheme

Pradhan Mantri Suryoday Yojana

The primary objectives of the Pradhan Mantri Suryoday Yojana are:

  1. Energy Self-Reliance: To make India self-sufficient in energy by harnessing solar power at the household level.
  2. Financial Relief: To reduce the electricity expenses of poor and middle-class families by providing free or subsidized solar power.
  3. Environmental Sustainability: To decrease reliance on non-renewable energy sources, thereby reducing carbon emissions and promoting a cleaner environment.

Key Features of the Scheme

  1. Subsidy Provision: The scheme offers a subsidy of up to 40% to households for the installation of rooftop solar panels, making renewable energy more affordable and accessible.
  2. Phased Implementation: The rollout is planned in phases, with installations projected to exceed 10 lakh (1 million) by March 2025, doubling to 20 lakh by October 2025, reaching 40 lakh by March 2026, and ultimately achieving the target of one crore by March 2027.
  3. Model Solar Village Initiative: Under this component, one Model Solar Village per district will be established to promote solar energy adoption and empower village communities to achieve energy self-reliance. An allocation of ₹800 crore has been designated for this initiative, with ₹1 crore provided to each selected village.
